This back-land site in Clapham sits within a remarkable urban setting -- a walled garden separated from Bedford Road since 1925, accessed via a quiet grass track alongside allotments and residential gardens. The consented scheme delivers a single three-bedroom house, carefully placed to the eastern end of the plot to preserve the open character of the site and minimise impact on neighbouring properties.
The design responds to its exceptional context with a deliberately light touch. A single-storey pavilion form sits above ground, clad in metal with a green roof, while the main living accommodation opens around a south-facing courtyard at basement level, drawing light deep into the plan through full-height glazing and a walkable rooflight above. RIDE delivered the technical design, taking a sensitively resolved scheme through to construction.
